Since the resolution of the Dominion war, exploration of the Gamma quadrant via the Bajoran worm hole has resumed.

With this comes a diverse range of customs, habits and tradition. Any respectable officer wishing to avoid a sticky situation, would do wise to learn about local laws and culture before embarking on an away mission. Ignorance is no excuse and serving in Starfleet means that one is not complacent in their duties.
