THE KLINGON EMPIRE
Origin: Q'onoS (Kronos, the Klingon homeworld)
One of the major powers in the Alpha quadrant, Klingons are a proud well-statured warrior race whose society adhere to a code of honour and combat. Renowned for their pre-disposition for hostility, Klingons tend to be short-tempered and wiry, preferring to fight than argue, act than ponder. Suicide is often preferred over life with long term illness or disability. Although they believe in an afterlife, Klingons perform no burial ritual and dispose of the corpse by the most efficient means possible, though some archaeological digs on Qo'noS suggest different customs at one time.
Klingons are committed to their warrior ethics, so deeply that during the civil war, rivals would meet for periods and drink as equals within the neutral grounds of the capital city. Warriors derive great pleasure and satisfaction from drinking with their opponents the night before a battle.
A Klingon is more inclined to fight to the death than be taken hostage, something which a warrior considers a great dishonor, not only to himself, but to his family for three generations.
A spiritual people, according to legend, the gods created the Klingon race in an image not of their own. Not unlike the deities in Greek mythology, Klingon gods had an agenda of their own, which often lead to suffering and chaos for their new creatures. In answer, Kortar the first Klingon and his mate slew the gods, forever forging them as warriors and conquerors. Though cursed to pay for killing their own creators upon their deaths, both were strong and fear not even death. It is from these two, from which the legends says the Klingon race was born.
Klingons are larger and physically stronger than Humans, though they possessed a much lower tolerance for cold weather. In the Klingon body there are a great deal more redundancies to increase chance of survival from battle wounds. They have twenty-three ribs, two livers, an eight-chambered heart, three lungs, and even redundant neural function and multiple stomachs. The most distinguished feature of a Klingon is the their facial ridges. The size of the ridges on the forehead of a Klingon often is synonymous to their distinction in society.
Kahless also known as Kahless the unforgettable, is a messianic figure in Klingon history, who unified the Klingon people and became the first Klingon emperor. The Klingons' most important symbol of leadership, Kahless said that Klingons should fight not just to shed blood, but to enrich the spirit. The story of Kahless is a cornerstone of Klingon mythology and religion.
Alliance
After the Khitomer Accord of 2290 and the later Narendra Treaty of 2354, the Klingons entered into a shaky alliance with the Federation, which ended in the 2370s and was reformed shortly thereafter.
Empire
The Klingon Empire is an interstellar political entity in the Beta Quadrant, headed by the Klingon Chancellor and High Council, based in the Great Hall in the First City on planet Qo'noS.
The empire was begun by Kahless the Unforgettable, who first united the Klingon people. Fifteen hundred years later, Kahless, son of Kahless, a clone of the original Kahless, was installed as Emperor of the Klingon Empire, the first in three centuries, though given no political power. (TNG episode: "Rightful Heir")
Non-Klingon subjects of the Klingon Empire are called "jeghpu'wI'", a status greater than slave, but less than citizen. (TNG novel: Diplomatic Implausibility)
