A founding member of the Federation, the Vulcan’s are a humanoid people who are known across the alpha and beta quadrant for their strict adherence to logic. In the distant past, the Vulcan’s were a violent, savage race, making war upon themselves. Surak began to teach his people another way. The suppression of emotion, in pursuit of a life of pure logic. By the 4th century, a faction rejected these teachings, while the rest of the planet embraced them. Over the following centuries, the Vulcans colonised the stars, colonising other worlds and having diplomatic relationships with other worlds. Not all of these were cordial, there was particular amenity between Vulcans and the neighbouring Andorians. In 2063, a Vulcan survey ship detected a warp test flight from Earth. Although, this would be celebrated as a key moment in the history of the Federation, there were tensions between Earth and Vulcan’s for the first 100 years.

Vulcans would not share their technology, and the authorities of Earth were mostly deferential to Vulcan guidance. In turn, Vulcans felt that humans were too impulsive and reckless. In the mid 2150s, the ruling Vulcan High Command had become more aggressive in its approach, attempting purges of those who were seen as political enemies. This regime (secretly backed by Romulans) was overthrown, Vulcans became more tolerant of other cultures. The Vulcans would go on to be a founding member of the United Federation of Planets, with members of their species being prized for the analytical abilities in the fields of science and diplomacy amongst others. Physiology The slanted eyebrows and pointed ears are perhaps the only external features that would distinguish a Vulcan from a human. However, internally Vulcan’s are radically different. As well as their green blood, the arrangements of Vulcan organs is significantly different from humans. Vulcans also have greater strength than humans. Vulcan’s are also touch telepaths, able to swap thoughts with other Vulcans or aliens. Indeed, this process can allow a Vulcan to transfer his entire essence into another, that can be transferred to others this “katra” can survive for centuries after the death of the body Vulcans are capable of reproducing with other species. With humans, Vulcan traits tend to be dominant.

Culture

Vulcans are something of a paradox, although they value logic above all, many of their traditions date back to their ancient times, with the use of ornate ceremonies, and even in extreme cases ritual combat. The latter example may be an outcome of marriage, as Vulcans are compelled to return to their home world and mate with pre arranged partners. Aside from this process, known as Pon Farr, there have been numerous circumstances that impair a Vulcan’s emotional control, this can result in the Vulcan becoming violent. However, Vulcans that do not follow the path of logic are not necessarily savage, just as Vulcans that do embrace logic are not necessarily beyond reproach.
